Suitcase 8 Running Extremely Slow on my Mac

$

Thanks, been working with Extensis still awaiting a fix. No anti-virus or Firewall applications in place to block the activities. A simple solution would seem to bring back the former view, impossible for Suitcase to instantly display my 30k fonts at one time. Before I had a simple list and only displayed the fonts I was requesting which happened nearly instantly. Good chance this would bring resolve to this issue and give customers what they are asking for.

I’d gladly pay again to be able to use V7 again. V8 is the worst. Where’s the Column view/List view???!!!
I hope someone gets fired for the V8 development.

Interesting! I thought I had that option turned off already. I do remember changing that setting at one point in last couple of days and that is when I started to notice these issues.

With that said, I just opened the document and made sure it’s setting was to not “pick the best”. I then closed the doc, quit photoshop, disabled the Roboto permanent option in Suitcase Fusion, and restarted my computer.

From there, I re-opened the document and Roboto loaded normally!

I must have toggled the “pick the best” option and forgot that it was on.

Sheesh, I feel silly!

Thanks so much for the help @ExtensisSupport1, I really appreciate it!

Has the Extensis owner mentioned anything about a fix to get Suitcase back to being usable again?

Ian, I agree with you. I have also tried contacting anyone at Extensis that I have had contact with and it is very quiet. I really don’t understand what Extensis was doing in this upgrade (actually it is a downgrade).

I did get a response on 11th December, but instead of the “connecting” promised after the webcast I just got another email from Clint which didn’t add anything beyond the usual platitudes:

“I want to let you know I have been reading and documenting ALL the feedback that we have gotten about Suitcase Fusion 8 so far. I realize these changes can be frustrating and I really do appreciate everyone’s candor with their feedback about how these changes affect them.”

That’s not the full email, but I don’t really want to get into conducting the discussion in public (yet). Due to work commitments I wasn’t able to send a message back until just before Christmas, and in fairness I wouldn’t expect anyone to have looked at that until the new year, but it’s been nearly two weeks now.

I’ve just emailed Chris Stevens, who is the sales engineer for the EMEA region. I’ll let everyone know if I get a response to that.

Performance issues - Incredibly slow font preview times

Just upgraded from Suitcase 7 for the plugin compatibility. I don’t know if this is a ‘me’ issue or a Suitcase issue, but the font previews are taking forever to load. In v7 I could scroll through the 30K+ fonts (work at a print facility that’s been digital since there’s been digital) on my system really smoothly, no performance issues at all. But since upgrading, Suitcase 8 is painfully slow. Scrolling through the font list is sluggish and then I have to wait for the previews to render on screen.

A realtime gif of my current UX: Suitcase 8 - Slow performance issue

At first I thought it might be a new install issue, like it may have been caching in the background, so I gave it a few days to run and do it’s thing, but it’s still taking about 30 seconds to preview 10 fonts on a screen. Running on a late 2014 iMac with 32GB of RAM, so the hardware should be able to handle it.

Is anyone have similar performance issues?

Couple of questions for you:

  • What happens if you create another Font Library and move a couple of hundred fonts to it? Does it still refresh slowly?

  • Do you have any Virus applications running? If yes, please try to disable temporarily to see if this resolves the issue.

  • Are you running the latest version of Suitcase Fusion 8 (19.0.4)?

I would recommend contacting our Support Team using our trackable support ticket system using the link below:

HI,

I am after just getting the asset by its id but dont seem to beable to do it.

I am trying to do this through HTTP
posting to the following URL:
http://localhost:8090:/api/v1/catalog/123-123-123/asset/?session=123123123
The JSON i am POSTing is:

{“fields”:[“Last Updated”],“term”:{“operator”:“equalValue”,“field”:“id”,“values”:[“10”]}}

this return 0 assets, but an asset with the Id 10 exsists. I can retreve it the same way using filename.
But cannot figure out why I cannot use the Asset Id.

Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Michael.

Problems with Suitcase plugins on Mac High Sierra and CC

HI guys

I have had this problem since i updated from os el capitan to the high sierra os and latest version of CC a few months ago.

What happens is when the computer restarts Suitcase opens up and says to contact my system administrator, plug ins can’t work. it then refers me to /usr/bin/corecli (no idea what that means?)

I click ok. It then has a long list of plug ins installed, most of them say installed and are greyed out with a tick in the box, on two of them however they are highlighted with blue ticks and you have to click install. The two plug ins are: 17.1.0635490 leading to the file APS/plug.ins.localized/ extensions localized (this one is related to Illustrator) AND 17.1.0.635490 leading to the file cs6/plugins/fontactivation (this one is realted to indesign)

Once I click install the fonts all work as normal. But the issue is, at my agency we have multiple version of the same font, say Helvetica. Previously if I opened an indesign doc and it had the version I don’t have activated, I could go to suitcase and activate it, and it would ping into the doc. Now when this happens, in order to get the unactivated font into indesign, or illustrator, I have to entirely restart indesign or illustrator, and then activate the font, and then open INDD/AI. This is causing a loss of speed as we have multiple files and versions of fonts per day.

At present no updates to other programs seem to correct the issue, I have a late 2013 iMac operating on High Siera 10.13. Indesign is 13.0 and Illustrator 22.0.1.

Suitcase is on version 6, what can I do to resolve this? as it was working fine before I updated the OS or CC so it is one of those two things that caused the issue. Is it simply that I need version 7 or 8?

Thanks

Thanks for the information.

Suitcase Fusion 6 is not compatible with High Sierra nor the latest versions of Adobe’s Creative Cloud. You will need to purchase the latest version of Suitcase Fusion 8 in order to have full compatibility.

So Chris is not the person to speak to about this; his job is mainly in sales and nothing to do with product management or development.
Unfortunately that means we’re stuck trying to get answers from Clint. All I can suggest is people keep making their feelings known via email or the support page.

If this is the case then how come my colleague who is also on High Sierra and has the latest version of CC not facing the same plug in issues?

It’s like Adobe…no one listening or seemingy cares (…crickets…) If you’re not careful, you’ll meet your demise like Quark did. You’re not the only font manager out there and the only reason we still use it is because we have for many years and are “used” to it, but that will only last for so long.

Scott,
I am experiencing the same issues, likewise over 30k fonts for a print shop operation. The issues remains the complaint of many, the loss of the previous view window. Suitcase is attempting to display all fonts due to the fact the former view is gone. Solution, seems as if we need to wait on Suitcase to finally listen to its loyal, long time users, bring back what was taken away, the split view. Now only the fonts we call upon need to give a preview.

As suggested, I’ve removed the big library and started a new one. Used a few ‘safe’ font families (Helvetica, Futura, Din, Avenir) in case the issue was with some weird font that’s been acquired over the decades. 386 fonts in total.

It certainly loads faster, but if I scroll top to bottom quickly, like I’m scanning for a font, I can still get ahead of the font previews.

There is virus software running (Webroot Secure Anywhere) but I tried shutting it down and restarting the machine and Suitcase but the problem persists.

Not sure if that’s the issue, at least in my case. I ran Suitcase 7 with the stacked columns, but the top window had the entire 30K+ library loaded and I could scroll through without any font preview lag.

Honestly is seems like the ‘completely redesigned’ advertised on the website (UX/UI excluded) was a new backend framework that behaves differently than Suitcase 7. Like Suitcase 7 had all of the font previews loaded, even the ones not actively seen on screen, while Suitcase 8 is trying to be more efficient and only loading the previews of what’s visible in the window.

Unfortunately I pan and scan through my font library seemingly much, much faster than Suitcase 8 can load right now. I’ll be contacting Extensis Support to see if there’s some odd thing going on with my setup that’s slowing it down. If I learn of a fix I’ll report back here.

Good luck with yours!

They probably have all or a (large) set of fonts permanently activated in Suitcase. This will create the illusion that fonts are auto-activating, when they really are not.

I am having the same issue. I’m on a Macbook Pro 2016, running Mac OS Sierra (10.12.6). I just updated to Suitcase Fusion 8 yesterday and suddenly inDesign CC 2018 is giving me the beachball every few seconds. What gives? Is there any way to go back to Fusion 7?
