Font Updates?

You can simply drag and drop the new font in your Suitcase Font Library.

Suitcase will automatically add the font as long as they have some differences such as version number, font type…

Once added, you can remove the other font or leave it in place. To remove the previous font, simply right click on the font and select ‘remove’.

NOTES -

  • Please make sure you have a backup of the font you would like to remove for safe keeping.
  • If you are replacing the font, sometimes auto-activation will not occur due to these differences. Documents/Projects that have used the previous font will need to be updated upon opening your project(s) and re-saved.

I am also writing to request that you restore the Column view/List view in Suitcase. My group are only allowed to use Opentype or Truetype fonts for our main client and I see no other way to quickly filter out the old Postscript fonts. The Column view/List view also greatly streamlined the way we work when searching for fonts in our extensive library. If you are unable to restore this function we will be forced to cancel our Extensis Suitcase use and look elsewhere. It worked perfectly before, why mess with success?!? We are anxiously awaiting an “update” to restore the Column view/List view. Thank you.

Where's the floating font preview feature?

What happened to the floating font previews that you could pull out and place over existing layouts in another program to visualize the font in position before committing to it—and then being able to activate it from that floating window?

This was one of the most handy features of Suitcase for my workflow in narrowing down fonts to The Chosen One.

I can’t find where this feature has been hidden/placed in Suitcase 8…HELP!

Are you talking about the font panels in the Adobe products?

NO.

I am talking about when you are in Suitcase itself, previewing fonts, in previous versions (until 8) on the far right, of the same line that shared the name of the font, was a star icon, then a camera icon (another handy feature I can’t find now in 8) and then the rectangle w a lightning bolt in it - it is THIS icon feature I speak of. (See attached pic.)

When you grabbed that rectangle-bolt icon, and dragged it ANYWHERE on your screen, it basically created a floating transparent PNG of that type example so that you could place it over any part of your design, anywhere, and physically see how it looks without having to actually activate the font and type into your design/program. If you changed the text inside Suitcase to be something else, or changed the preview size, it would also change in all of the floating preview windows you had created. as well

Then if you decided this was the font you wanted, you could activate the font straight from this transparent floating window. Or close it altogether if you didn’t want to use it.

It literally was a floating font preview of the font itself, and would move anywhere on your desktop you wanted it to go.

Thanks but no thanks to the current font preview.

Please bring back the former font previews. As it stands this version of Suitcase is nearly useless. I have resorted to using an online font source to help me locate fonts! A long time fan of Suitcase since loading version 3 from a floppy disk. I waited to upgrade until my InDesign plugins were up to date with other vendors, perhaps i should have waited a bit longer until this is hopefully resolved.

I relied on the spreadsheet type view. A long time Suitcase user and promoter to anyone who asks. I feel I have a fairly good knowledge base of fonts by sight and name. This current look is not functional for either myself or my co-workers. Perhaps bring back the former look as an option. If, anyone likes your current look, leave that option. As for streamlining, this is not the case with the new look, I spend several minutes looking for a particular font which I recall the name, then wait for the slow process of my fonts to load. I have over 30,000 fonts which ran smoothly until this update. I have the newest MacPro with lots of RAM, the new version should load nearly instantly as before.

I can’t stand the newest “view” options in the latest Suitcase…it’s so hard to see a broad view. Please bring back the grid view or whatever it was…NONE of the view options are any good. imho

And besides the view options being horrendous…it still takes too much time for InDesign to actually auto-activate…sometimes i just sit there for a minute or so. I might as well just use manual activate…probably be faster.

Well, that answer is of the most deepest of sadness for me. (Frustrated and slightly angry to be more honest.)

2 weeks ago, I was forced to update again - so TWICE in 2017 - at the tune of $66 for Suitcase Fusion (so $132 paid to Extensis in 2017, plus my biz partner, so another $132 there) just to keep the crucial font auto-activation working with my Adobe CC programs. Somewhat stomach-able to pay this “fee” once a year just for Extensis to “keep up” a crucial feature with industry standard programs. Twice? Pushing your users acceptable investment limits here…

BUT then mind-boggling this time…

…is that with this “update” Extensis actually made it a REGRESSION of So. Many. Features. that we came to depend upon for working fast, efficiently and pleasantly. As in, you moved Extensis to pre-version 3 feature levels. What am I even paying for now that my built-in Mac font manager provides the same basic features that you do?

At this point, there have been 4 features that I came to depend upon Extensis for, and you removed all 4 of them. Why? Clearly Extensis has gotten out-of-touch with how users actually USE their software for their work flows. This disconnect is how companies start to flounder.

Hopefully Extensis really is listening to their users here and these removed features will be put back in a NEAR future (free) update.

PixelGeek, It was incredible.

Very handy - my favorite feature in Suitcase - as you could literally see what a font looked like over your design immediately and make a decision without the “lag” of turning on a potential font in Suitcase, then jumping back to your program which itself then had a few seconds more lag as the program updated the font being activated, then moving to the area of your design you are considering using it, and changing the font there to say “yea or nay” and then starting the process all over again if it isn’t quite what you are looking for.

It was brilliant. It breaks my heart to type “was” vs “is”.

#1. Bring BACK the pull-out transparent window, floating font preview feature. This was my MOST LOVED and used feature (besides font preview in the main program itself).
#2. Save the state of activated fonts.
#3. Column view
#4. Bring back the png photo snap feature of a font, (so that you could send a font view example to a client for their approval)

Quite simply - bring back all the functionality and organization of Suitcase 7.
I hate, hate, hate V08. V07 was perfect.

Suitcase 8 Running Extremely Slow on my Mac

Since upgrading to Suitcase 8 I have experienced EXTREMELY SLOW response to any movement on my unwanted font display. Now that I have converted to Adobe CC 2018 what other choice is there besides the unresponsive version 8. Latest Mac OS on Mac Pro 2013, 8 core, 64 GB RAM, with over 250GB of SSD space available. I do run over 30k fonts with only the minimal activated and any given time, no issues prior to version 8. Running basic Adobe CC 2018 programs, InDesign, Illustrator & Photoshop. All was well before this latest update. Please advise, I was just totally embarrassed as a client watched me struggle to locate and load a font. More than 2 minutes to even load a preview, yes, I clocked it at 2:17 for a preview!

I restarted, reset SCRAM, PRAM, Disk Utility, cleaned font caches, restarted again and again. Left only Suitcase active, running overnight in the event it was updating the library. What else is one to do?

QuickMatch functionality?

From what I can see Quickmatch has become severely limited. There is no longer a scale to qualify how closely you want a font matched. The reduction in functionality is very regrettable.

Photoshop PSB reverts all Google fonts to Myriad Pro without warning

Photoshop 19.0
Suitcase Fusion 19.0.3

I’m working with a large PSB file.

My document is using Roboto from the Google library.

Twice now, within last couple of days, all of my fonts have been replaced with Myriad without any warning!

I’m not sure what is going on, but the first time this happened, I had to go through my entire document and replace each text layer with the appropriate Roboto font family and style/weight.

This last time, I caught the mistake before saving. I was able to close my PSB without saving, then go to Suitcase Fusion application, permanently enable Roboto, and then re-open my document. When I reopened my doc, Photoshop asked me to update all text layers (which I did). Thankfully, this restored my fonts back to Roboto.

Why did this happen?

Why didn’t Suitcase Fusion plugin work?

Why would My document lose it’s pointers to Roboto?

Is this a Photoshop problem or a Suticase Fusion problem?

Maybe I clicked a dialog box and told Photoshop to automatically bork my fonts if the font isn’t found? Maybe Photoshop does this before Suitcase Fusion loads and takes over?

How can I protect my document’s fonts from being converted to Myriad (other than permanently enabling the font before opening the document)?

Any help would be spectacular.

Thanks!

Please try changing the settings int he Auto-Activation settings for Suitcase in Photoshop.

We would recommend trying to deactivate/uncheck the “pick the best match…” option and see if the font(s) activate normally. More information about this topic can be found using the link below:

Suitcase 8 Running Extremely Slow on my Mac

Hi Don,

The usual suspects for slowness in our application is Virus or Firewall applications trying to block/inspect font activations.

We would recommend temporarily disabling these types of applications to see if your slowness improves.
